Humza Yousaf announced – or rather, re-announced existing plans – to introduce a Misogyny Bill to tackle “toxic masculinity” in society. No women wants to be subjected to abuse on the basis of her sex, and who wants something “toxic” to be running free? How can they confidently define what is – and therefore, what causing offence on the basis of being a woman, is? Misogynistic words will mean whatever the government choose them to mean – and subjectivity in law can give way to a shambles of justice. And even without the hate speech law being active, the free speech chill has crept into daily life.
