Authorities on Monday ordered widespread coastal evacuations in the Carolinas and Virginia as they braced for life-threatening flooding and extreme winds from a rapidly strengthening Hurricane Florence. Florence was recently churning over the Atlantic Ocean about 525 miles south-southeast of Bermuda. The storm reached Category 4 strength with maximum sustained winds of nearly 140 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center’s midday Monday update.
