This changed when my husband and I suddenly became dads to twin girls in the summer of 2020. For me (and, to a lesser degree, my husband), there was also a worry about leaving the house with the girls. (My husband is white, and though my girls are not white, they could pass for his biological kids if you squint.) It is particularly violent and vitriolic when aimed toward LGBTQ+ parents, or parents of queer kids. Last year in Oklahoma, a lesbian mom lost custody of her son due to a state law that recognized the parentage of her son’s sperm donor over her own.
