The International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards 2017 kick-started with a bang on July 14. Alia Bhatt won the Best Actress Award for Udta Punjab for her perfect portrayal of a gritty migrant woman exploited and trapped in a drug lord's house. Her co-star in the film, Shahid Kapoor, won the Best Actor Award for playing Tommy Singh, a Punjabi rockstar grappling with a drug addiction. Udta Punjab was clearly a favourite with the jury, and Diljit Dosanjh also won an award for the film - Best Debutant. Neerja won the Best Film Award, while Pink director Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury took home the award for Best Director.
