THE Igbo Progressive Union has faulted the appointment of Mr Nnamdi Ukeagu from Abia State as a commissioner in the Independent National Electoral Commission, describing the appointment as unfair to Enugu and Ebonyi States. The group argued that Ukeagu’s appointment had given Imo, Abia and Benue States an undue advantage in the commission, stressing that a commissioner, Festus Okoye, is already representing a sub-group comprising Abia, Imo and Benue States in INEC. Ibeano represented the Anambra, Enugu and Ebonyi sub-group in the commission. Replacing Ibeano with someone from Enugu or Ebonyi, the group noted, was in keeping with the good conscience, fairness, justice and equity as the cardinal indexes of the federal character principles “which Mr President is known for.”The political pressure group, therefore, admonished the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd. ), to “review and reverse this perversion of justice and consider appointing a well-qualified and credible candidate from the sub-zone of Anambra, Ebonyi and Enugu.”It stated, “This sub-zone cannot afford to have less and undignified representative after having such high profile academic and erudite scholar of Professor Okechukwu Ibeano’s calibre.
