Van der Zwaan is the son-in-law of German Khan, a billionaire and an owner of Alfa Group, Russia’s largest financial and industrial investment group. The van der Zwaan plea deal is a new front of Mueller’s sprawling probe, which has so far netted three other guilty pleas, including one from former national security adviser Michael Flynn. In fact, prosecutors alleged van der Zwaan spoke with Gates and the second person in September 2016 and recorded the calls. A Dutch citizen, van der Zwaan, 33, will face a recommended sentence ranging from zero to six months in prison when he is sentenced April 3. In a statement Tuesday, Skadden said van der Zwaan had worked at the firm since 2007 but was terminated in 2017.
