In Myanmar, Landslide at Jade Mine Kills More Than 160 People

YANGON, Myanmar—At least 162 people have been found dead after heavy rains triggered a landslide at a jade mine in northern Myanmar, the deadliest accident that the largely unregulated industry has seen in years. Myanmar is the world’s largest producer of jade, a precious green gemstone mined almost exclusively for export to neighboring China. The multibillion-dollar industry has been linked to decades of corruption, poor labor conditions and human-rights abuses, according to human-rights organizations.
