Several social media influencers are facing income tax heat following their posts on travel to exotic locations. The income-tax department has sent notices to 15 such influencers, who had flaunted their overseas holidays and luxury shopping, for paying zero or “substantially low” tax despite receiving hefty fees from companies whose products they promoted through their posts, a senior official told ET. The list includes a high-profile fashion influencer, a lifestyle and fitness coach, travel influencers and an influencer known for posts on Bollywood. Last week, income tax officials conducted searches on 10 YouTubers in Kerala, including a regional actor. Officials said the provision of TDS helped them in tracking the income of the social media influencers.
