India's renewable energy sector wrapped up calendar year 2025 with a record-breaking surge in capacity additions, underscoring the pace of the country's clean energy transition.About 48 GW of new renewable capacity was added during the year, including large hydro projects, while around 45 GW was added excluding the large hydro segment, compared with 28 GW added in 2024.Solar power continued to dominate capacity expansion in the renewable energy segment, contributing to a massive 38 GW of new capacity during the year. The wind energy sector also added its highest-ever annual capacity, with about 6.3 GW added to the grid, marking a strong recovery for the sector.Meanwhile, Gujarat has emerged as the leader in cumulative installed renewable energy capacity, dislodging Rajasthan by a narrow margin. Gujarat's capacity (including large hydro) stood at 42,583 MW, while Rajasthan's capacity was at 42,531 MW. Maharashtra ranked third with 30,313 MW, while Tamil Nadu stood in fourth place with 27,113 MW.As of Dec 31, 2025, India's total renewable energy capacity stood at 207 GW, rising to 258 GW including large hydro.
