India forcing Twitter to block tweets on IOK since August 2017: CPJ report

The requests sent by Indian officials to Twitter, between August 2017 and August 2019, are not public, but the Silicon Valley social media company passes some of them to Lumen – a project of Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center. “Excluding copyright notices, CPJ found 53 requests, including 13 sent by the Indian election commission around 2019 general election. Nine of those date from August 2019 when the communications blackout in IOK began, a spike from the preceding months,” said the CPJ report. It added, “Ninety-three of those accounts were withheld in India when CPJ tested them in September and October 2019. Another 29 individual tweets from different accounts were also withheld.
