The backlash against the new law marks the strongest show of dissent against Mr Modi’s government since he was first elected in 2014. Critics have slammed the legislation as a violation of India’s secular constitution and have called it the latest effort by Mr Modi’s government to marginalise the country’s 200 million Muslims. Mr Modi has defended the law as a humanitarian gesture. A small band of supporters of Mr Modi’s party marched in New Delhi on Sunday.
