Indian firm recalls eye drops linked to blindness in US

Global Pharma Healthcare is recalling all blindness-related eye drops in the United States, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (VIM-GES-CRPA) infection may be associated with the use of artificial tears manufactured by Global Pharma Healthcare,” said the USFDA. Eye infections, blindness and even death from bloodstream infections are among the 55 reported side effects. The USFDA states that “use of contaminated artificial tears may pose a risk of eye infections that can lead to blindness.” Lubricating eye drops, such as artificial tears, are applied to the eyes as a preventive measure against irritation or as a treatment for dry eyes. The Chennai-based company’s eye drops are the latest Indian product to face scrutiny after an Indian-made cough syrup was linked to infant deaths in The Gambia and Uzbekistan.
