Earlier Monday, Indian soldiers laid a siege around a village in Kashmir’s southern Shopian area on a tip that militants were hiding there, said Col. Rajesh Kalia, an army spokesman. As the soldiers launched search operations, soldiers and militants exchanged gunfire, Kalia said. The gunbattle came hours after Indian troops killed five militants in the same area, also triggering fierce clashes with villagers. Pakistan denies this, saying it offers only moral and diplomatic support to the militants and to Kashmiris who oppose Indian rule.
