Intercultural competency should be developed in young people as early as possible in today’s globalised world, according to Derrick Gay, a globally recognised belonging and intercultural strategist. “Intercultural competency is not simply about being surrounded by diversity, it requires intentional learning. His advice for building intercultural competency is that it should be an explicit subject. “Many organisations still mistakenly believe that diversity alone equals intercultural competency. Diversity is only the starting point.”He concluded that intercultural competency must be intentionally developed.
