One of seven grammar schools in Gloucestershire, Marling offers 150 places for entry next September. “For we know that grammar schools are hugely popular with parents. The arguments against grammar schools are well known. Pupils are less likely to attend a grammar school if they attend primary schools with a high proportion of pupils from deprived backgrounds. It is often forgotten that grammar schools became hugely unpopular in the 1950s, among the middle classes in particular, because their children weren’t always the ones selected.
