Is it right to ask guests to remove their shoes on entering your house? Why would anybody want to bring into a lovely clean house the dust and dirt of a mining town like Barnsley? Increasingly guests of my age now ask if I would like them to remove their shoes, and I always gratefully agree. But I still can't help my discomfort when guests march through my house in their outdoor shoes. I can think of few gestures more hostile or unwelcoming than asking guests to take their shoes off.
