Skint after the holidays? Help is at hand in the shape of some tasty sub-£6.50 swigs. With our average spend on a bottle of wine still a risible £6.22 a bottle, of which £2.23 is duty and £1.04 VAT, what amazes me, given our shrinking pound and rising costs, is just how many good wines can still be had at rock-bottom prices. True, surplus stock from lockdown-closed bars and restaurants, plus the 25 per cent tariffs levied by the US, has created something of a wine glut for UK buyers to exploit; for the first time in years there was a trio of sub-£4 bottles that won through in my top 100 wines for 2020 in The Times last month.
