Join the debate Are sleep trackers helping us rest better or just fueling anxiety about getting enough sleep? Most consumer-grade sleep trackers use a combination of motion sensors and heart rate monitoring to infer sleep stages. Sleep trackers, however, rely on algorithms to guess if you’re asleep, awake or in a specific sleep stage. Despite sleep trackers’ obsession with deep sleep and REM sleep – which, after all, sound sexier than plain old ‘stable’ sleep – all stages of sleep are vital. They thought removing ‘unnecessary’ sleep stages while preserving deep sleep and REM would maximise performance.
