The posture photos were simply taken, collected and saved for an intended research that sought to link physique to temperament. Beyond the ivy league universities, Sheldon’s somatotyping campaign also extended to about 46,000 individuals that were photographed at military and medical institutions. At that time, there were rumors of break-ins at the university photos labs where many of the nude photos were kept. In what was called the Great Ivy League Nude Posture Photo Scandal, the New York Times broke the story and a lot was revealed.
