Dr. Amarasuriya noted that the original Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) was never opened to those outside of the defence field. National Intellectuals’ Organisation (NIO) Chairman Prof. Chandana Abeyratne said the proposed Bill is a death blow to free education and called upon everybody who has received a free education to defeat it. However, under the proposed Bill, the KDNU is under the Defence Ministry, with no oversight of the Education Ministry. We do not mind the Defence Ministry handling syllabuses for defence-related fields in whatever way they see fit. Meanwhile, the Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) held protests in a number of districts last week against the proposed KNDU Bill.
