TOKYO—NTT Docomo Inc., which broke free of its tradition-minded parent to become a global pioneer of the mobile internet, is returning to its old home in a $40 billion deal that erases its independence. Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp., the former government monopoly that is Japan’s top telecommunications company, said Tuesday it would buy back the roughly one-third of Docomo it doesn’t already own.
