The man leading the investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Thomas 'Taff' Jones, was convinced the Bamber family had been killed in a murder/suicide. Sheila, Jeremy Bamber's sister, had been suffering from severe mental health problems and her brother had called police to say his father had phoned to say she was "going beserk" with a rifle. Det Insp Miller said: "I turned to Micky Barlow and said 'this bloke's acting." Det Insp Miller said: "Sure enough, I got a call from Jeremy's teacher shortly afterwards. Even on the way to the crematorium, Bamber's family say he was cracking smutty jokes and his strange behaviour continued when he got back to the wake.
