A live stage reading of My Dinner with Andre, the over-thinking 1981 indie film drama starring Andre Gregory and Wallace Shawn, but this time featuring two of the biggest names in comedy--John Mulaney and Nick Kroll. In front of a packed house at the Wallis Center for the Performing Arts last night in Beverly Hills, Mulaney and Kroll updated--and promptly upended--director Louis Malle's classic film that centers around a heady dinner conversation between two middle-aged men. As a crowd-pleasing twist, Mulaney and Kroll didn't assume the roles of Andre and "Wally" as expected (those honors fell upon actor Michael Keaton and comedian and former Saturday Night Live writer Paula Pell). Andre announces how much he admires the Swedish physicist Gustav Björnstrand, and Mulaney's character can't get past the dots over the o. Film Independent, which runs the Spirit Awards (Mulaney and Kroll hosted that show last year), sponsored last night's reading as part of an ongoing series of such readings in recent years.
