Johnson out as Alabama basketball coach after 4 seasons

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Avery Johnson brought attention, more fans and several highly rated recruits to Alabama’s basketball program. Athletic director Greg Byrne announced Sunday that Alabama and Johnson “made the decision to mutually part ways” after his fourth season coaching the Crimson Tide. He was named NBA coach of the year after leading the Dallas Mavericks to their first appearance in the finals in 2005-06. Johnson coached the Mavericks for four seasons and the Brooklyn Nets for two-plus seasons. Tide associate head coach John Pelphrey will serve as interim head coach.
