Monday in Ottawa dripped with talk of progressive values, as it often does. There’s an economic payoff to all the progressive values, Trudeau argues. Underlying the rhetoric is a tacit promise that progressive values add up to prosperity — a dividend that suggests economic growth should not only benefit all types of people but is actually born of inclusion, diversity and respect for the environment as well. But it’s an assumption that’s at risk of not adding up — at least, not based on progressive values alone. And there’s a troubling number that should be butting up sharply against politicians espousing progressive values as an antidote to slow growth: Canada’s productivity has been declining.
