Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says his country is in a more stable place now that it has completed a renegotiation of a free trade deal with the United States and Mexico. Trudeau said Monday the new trade deal with Mexico and the United States will be “profoundly beneficial” — and pledged taxpayers’ dollars to compensate dairy farmers he admitted would be hurt by giving U.S. farmers partial access to Canada’s regulated dairy markets. U.S. President Donald Trump takes questions Monday during a news conference to discuss a revised U.S. trade agreement with Mexico and Canada. Trudeau and Freeland claimed they had defended Canada’s supply management system against U.S. negotiators who wanted to see it dismantled. The trade deal brings changes to the agricultural supply management system.
