There were reports earlier that Shah Rukh plays the husband of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's character, who dies about half-way through the film. There was a lot of speculation, whether Shah Rukh would be a part of the project, since he is always an integral part of Karan Johar's films barring his last film Student of the year, which featured a cameo by Kajol. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil exploded after the launch of the film's teaser featuring an intense Ranbir Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Anushka Sharma and a bearded Fawad Khan.
