President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency Friday to deal with the coronavirus pandemic is anything but a sign to panic. On the contrary, this is a commonsense, measured response to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. That’s why it makes sense that this week, Washington and the surrounding states of Virginia and Maryland have all declared states of emergency. In addition to the higher death rate, the coronavirus appears to be more infectious than the flu. Because positive measures are being taken, less people may become infected, and we’re working toward ensuring that the American health care system has the capacity to handle new cases.
