It’s probably worth noting right off the top that I’ve never considered it a big deal that Canada has a constitution. Venezuela, currently in full meltdown from a combination of lawlessness, corruption and crime, also has a constitution, its 26th. Today it’s the reason deeply disturbed people can easily obtain the weapons needed to wipe out entire classrooms of children. You see, politicians are elected to make decisions reflecting public values; they don’t actually require judges to make them on their behalf. They have largely gone unchallenged, precisely because elected officials have feared the sort of backlash Ford must now contend with.
