Tweets have poured forth from the White House since the shutdown began, blaming Democrats for foiling the will of the people. Hence the need to recast the issue as one of “border security” and edge away from a wall to some sort of alternative means of restraint. Which makes the climbdown that much more delicate and embarrassing to all those who champion the Trump wall, other perhaps than Trump himself, who with typical elan simply refuses to recall what he used to say. “The president still says ‘wall’ — oftentimes frankly he’ll say ‘barrier’ or ‘fencing,’ now he’s tended toward steel slats. “An all concrete Wall was NEVER ABANDONED,” he insisted, even while agreeing Border Patrol officers preferred something they could see through.
