Kenya: EPRA defies court , increases price of petroleum products

The Kenyan government has defied a high court order blocking a slew of new taxes, by increasing the VAT on petroleum products effective from this past Saturday, July 1. EPRA said the changes in the maximum allowed petroleum pump prices in Kenyan capital Nairobi are as follows: Super petrol, diesel and kerosene increase by Kshs.13.49, Kshs.12.39 and Kshs.11.96 per litre respectively. This means a litre of petrol that cost Ksh182.04 ($1.29) before July 1, will now cost Ksh195.53 ($1.39). A litre of diesel increased from Ksh167.28 ($1.19) to Ksh179.67 ($1.28) and kerosene will cost Ksh173.44 ($1.23) from Ksh161.48 ($1.15). Earlier this year civil unrest spread across Kenya over the outcome of last year’s general elections and rising living costs.
