A rental agent told us what was needed, and we added a loft railing and detectors for smoke, CO 2 , and carbon monoxide. Today our Iranian neighbor dropped in and I began to demonstrate my new cane, since she was complaining of back pain. We pulled one carbon monoxide detector off the wall, but then I noticed it had no batteries (we had removed them early on when it kept going off). High on the ceiling upstairs is a hard-wired smoke detector which had never before gone off. Since we have battery-powered 10 year smoke detectors installed, my plan is to have the hardwired detector removed, since if this happened in the middle of the night I certainly would have a heart attack.
