We all have to excuse all the president’s men who descended on Bishop Matthew Kukah for his Christmas homily. When we are unable to rebut an opponent’s argument, we deploy the strawman strategy. Regarding Kukah’s alleged call for a military coup, we could say that the activist Catholic bishop set himself up for the strawman strategy. Kukah mostly lamented insecurity, bloodshed, mass suffering, deepening disillusionment, and what seems to be a rudderless leadership. “There would have been a military coup a long time ago or we would have been at war.”And therein lies the strawman.
