L.A. Times makes changes to printed sports section

While it is “not as drastic" as the N.Y Times' decision to disband its sports department and rely on The Athletic for sports coverage, the L.A. Times also is “making major changes to their sports coverage,” according to Andrew Bucholtz of AWFUL ANNOUNCING. The publication's printed sports section is “doing away with several elements that had long been standbys: game stories, box scores, and standings." KILLING THE HAND THAT FEEDS: In Boston, Chad Finn wrote The Athletic has “assured that one newspaper’s sports department will no longer exist." CULTURE CLASH: The WALL STREET JOURNAL's Alexandra Bruell wrote the Times decision comes as it “goes all in on its strategy to sell subscriptions to a multi-product offering, including news, games and sports, and justify its Athletic purchase." The list of "recent media carnage is long enough that any attempt will not be exhaustive, but will be exhausting" (TORONTO STAR, 7/10).
