He had been treated for oesophageal cancer recently, but succumbed to organ failure in his sleep, according to the Twitter account run with his playing partner, Dave Peacock. Chas & Dave were big names in the late 1970s and early 1980s, with “ear-worm” hits such as Rabbit and The Sideboard Song, and the ballad Ain’t No Pleasing You. They were renowned for their “rockney” style, which mixed the pub singalong with humour and a heavy dose of cockney banter inspired by a desire not to sound like British singers who tried to fake American accents.
