Two doses of Pfizer's Covid vaccine are nearly as effective at preventing infection with the Delta variant as they are against the Alpha variant. The latest, real-world data from England, however, show that people fully vaccinated with the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine were 88% protected against symptomatic infection with the Delta variant. In people who had received only the first dose, the effectiveness was just 30.7%, underscoring the importance of getting the second shot. The Delta variant spread rapidly across South Africa and was confirmed to be circulating in all nine provinces earlier this month.
