Lawan advocates for stringent, stiffer penalties for rape criminals

Apparently piqued by the incessant cases of rape all over the country, President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan, has advocated for stringent measures and stiffer penalties against perpetrators involved in the heinous crime of rape in the country. Lawan’s advocacy was coming against the backdrop of a motion considered to condemn the increasing cases of rape and brutality against the girl child in Nigeria. He observed that with stringent measures and stiffer penalties in place in Nigeria’s criminal and penal code would be defaulters would be weary of the consequences of such crime“We stand together should to shoulder on this, and I think we need to make the penalties for rape stiffer to be sufficient deterrent for those who are involved in this, or who even desire to be involved. It also condemned the killings of the young girls, and called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators of these unwholesome acts. The Senate also observed a minute silence for Tina and Uwa and all those who have lost their lives from such brutality and rape.
