(Photo: Varuth Hirunyatheb)The Lawyers Association of Thailand has described as “shameful” and potentially unlawful the move by the Election Commission (EC) to file criminal complaints against six people monitoring a re-run vote in Bangkok last weekend. Monitoring and observing the election process, including taking photographs and recording video, did not constitute obstruction of election officials under Section 66 of the 2017 Organic Act on the Election Commission, it said. No eligible voter had filed a complaint claiming that any of the six individuals disrupted the election, the statement noted. As such, the lawyers said, it could constitute the offence of filing a false criminal complaint under Sections 172 and 173 of the Criminal Code, if it is established that no wrongdoing occurred.
