My father’s young brother, Uncle Tom Mbotela, loved politics a lot. Unlike my father who was a bit reserved, Uncle Tom was an outgoing man who interacted with people across all social classes. Uncle Tom, as we fondly called him at home, was born in 1912. He became the Secretary General of Kenya African Union (KAU) in 1950 at the time when Jomo Kenyatta was the Chairman. On the contrary, Uncle Tom was seen as a sell out by the diehard Mau Mau adherents.
