When people spend less money, the government takes in less money in taxes, affecting government spending after the shutdown. Federal money that has been budgeted for state services stops. We pay federal employees the back pay they lost during that time, and we struggle to get needed government services while the federal government gets back to work. No one wins and we all lose when the House of Representatives and the Senate cannot agree on a federal budget and the government shuts down.
