Violent crime remains intolerably high, but the left wants you to think that perception is just a concoction of right-wing media. When the left acknowledges this fact, it often does so by tying the violent crime increase to the sale of guns. The FBI’s recent 2021 crime data that Bump highlighted to dismiss the crime surge showed a slight decrease in overall violent crime compared with 2020—a year that saw a significant surge in violent crime compared with 2019. There was a significant spike in violent crime following the 2020 riots in the wake of the death of George Floyd. Even the small city of Asheville, North Carolina, experienced a 31% increase in violent crime since 2016.
