The Liberal party in Victoria has chosen lawyer and Melbourne city councillor Roshena Campbell as the candidate for their side in the Aston by-election, setting up an important test for both the Albanese government and the Dutton-led Opposition. This selection also addresses the Liberal party’s review from last year which noted the need for more female candidates. Doyle, who was endorsed by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, cut Tudge’s margin in the May 2022 election from 10,1% to 2.8%. Aston is one of three metropolitan Melbourne seats currently held by the Liberals and has a higher-than-average proportion of mortgaged residents. He attributes this to the unpopularity of his leadership in Victoria and the loss of Tudge’s personal vote.
