The continuation of that trend in this week’s budget should have Grits worried that their party is losing its soul. But with this week’s budget, Canadians remain deprived of the universal pharmacare and daycare that have long been mainstays of Europe’s social safety net. As a matter of official party policy, the Liberals have long supported universal pharmacare and daycare. That last priority enjoys such widespread acceptance that this week’s budget is one of the few places where it doesn’t get meaningful consideration. After this week’s budget, Canada remains a G7 economy without a national industrial strategy for incubating future Apples, Mercks and Teslas.
