The head of research affairs at the Libyan Centre for Plastics Research, Dr Hussein Al-Tamimi has taken part in a meeting at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as part of a regional effort to support advanced environmental research. A statement by Centre said the participation comes within the launch of a regional scientific project aimed at improving understanding of microplastic pollution and its impact on marine environments across Africa. The project relies on nuclear techniques and isotope tracing methods. Supported by the IAEA, the initiative seeks to assess sources of plastic pollution — particularly microplastics — along Libya’s coastline and in other African countries, while analysing their distribution using advanced scientific methodologies. It will also examine the environmental impact of microplastics on marine ecosystems, including marine life and food chains, and explore effective scientific approaches for the safe disposal of plastic waste and mitigation of its long-term effects.
