Lion dances, translators and building trust: How Chinatown came together to boost vaccine uptake

With Kensington-Chinatown recording the lowest vaccination rate in Toronto, the Cecil Community Centre — a mainstay of Chinatown for more than 40 years — is hoping its two-day vaccination clinic can help. Rick Wong, an instructor with Hong Luck, said the club wanted to help where it could to address low vaccine uptake in the community. He pointed to Cecil Community Centre, Friends of Kensington Market and Friends of Chinatown as the organizations needed to make this clinic a success. Outreach organizations such as Cecil “(help) people actually understand what’s going on and get to the place that they know and trust,” he said. When people see our logo, they already trust it because they know what we do,” Purdy said of Cecil Community Centre.
