The companies were closed over alleged tax evasion claims and had been raided by KRA on several occasions. Among the companies that resumed operations are Africa Spirits, owned by billionaire businessman Humphrey Kariuki and Tabitha Karanja's Keroche Breweries. Keroche Breweries LtdKRA closed Keroche on May 15 after the brewer allegedly failed to honour its tax arrears repayment plan as agreed. Mount Kenya Breweries LtdIn April 2021, the taxman closed Mt Kenya Breweries over failure to file tax returns and the use of fake stamps. KRA shut down the brewer after raiding Mt Kenya Breweries premises in Nanyuki on April 9 and 10, 2021.
