Aside from Leicester, we have had more experience of living with local lockdowns than anywhere else and we have real concerns that they simply do not work. Local lockdowns can create a perverse incentive to travel for people in areas where cases are high. The Kent variant ripped through local lockdowns last Christmas leading to a national lockdown in the New Year. And behind the questionable health benefits, there is the certain economic harm of new local lockdowns in some of the places already hardest hit by this pandemic. Talk of imposing local lockdowns is too easy but the consequences are too stark.
