The Guggenheim said in 2007 that its 450,000-square-foot satellite designed by Frank Gehry would be part of the Saadiyat Island Cultural District, a square-mile complex just off the shore of Abu Dhabi island. The district also includes the Louvre Abu Dhabi, designed by Jean Nouvel. Over the years some people concerned with the plight of the workers held protests inside the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. Museum officials have said that they were working closely with partners in Abu Dhabi to improve the welfare of workers. That official did not respond to an email asking when museum construction would get underway.
