Former Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl has argued that Françafrique is over after France lost Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger where leaders have turned to Russia, China and Turkey. “France is gradually losing its foothold in African countries: they’ve been expelled from Mali, they’ve been expelled from Burkina Faso. For France, I think this is the official end of the Françafrique policy, since the new authorities can choose,” she declared. Central African Republic (CAR), Mali, Burkina Faso and now Niger, all of them former French colonies, have severed ties with the European country and moved closer to Russia. France after being flashed out from Mali and Burkina Faso set up camp in Niger.
