Lower-income households have more breathing problems than wealthy Americans

People who live in lower income housing in the U.S. having more breathing problems and lung illnesses than wealthy Americans, a new study suggests. Researchers from Harvard Medical School found that about 50 percent of adults in the lowest percentile have trouble breathing compared to nearly 30 percent in the highest percentile. Similarly, Americans in the lowest percentile were at least twice as likely to report coughing or wheezing, compared to those in the highest income brackets. Results showed that from 2017 to 2018, 48.3 percent of adults in the lowest income percentile reported difficulty or labored breathing compared to 27.9 percent in the highest income percentile. What's more, 16 percent of adults in the lowest income percentile had COPD in comparison with four percent in the highest income percentile.
